Transform your lead playing and never be stuck for ideas ever!
Sound too good to be true? Nope, using the simple idea that I present here you'll never have to wander aimlessly around the fretboard ever again, and you'll never be stuck for new musical Ideas! DISCLAIMER - I am not suggesting that you steal the work of others and pass it off as your own. But use the work of others as an inspiration/guide/starting point to build you own style. Just like it's always been. BACKGROUND - Two things happened that lead me to this.... First - I was doing some 'house keeping' on an old 4 track tape recorder. I'd got all sorts on. I was listening to something and I had some lead playing going on from one song coming through on top of another song. Just for a few seconds, until the spell was broken, it sounded amazing. Second - I was playing a MIDI keyboard onto a computer. It was a well known melody. I hadn't taken much notice of the 'quantize' function - where the computer shifts notes to the nearest beat. Anyway, when I came to play it back, although the notes were correct some of them had been shifted. This had created a whole new groove/feel/melody. GERM OF AN IDEA - So, this got me thinking, that even the most ordinary and well known licks could take on new life if they were subtlety changed. I tested this idea out on some of my friends. Taking a guitar solo from one song and bending it to fit over another song. Even when I made it very obvious people didn't seem to sus' it until I pointed it out. Now, the beauty of doing this is that because you already know the solo, you know exactly what the next phrase is gonna sound like, so you can play it straight, bend it to fit, repeat it, skip it, whatever, but you'll know exactly where you are. In an attempt to present this to you guys I recorded this video a while back... http://www.vanderbilly.com/Guitar-Le...e,14421,1.html Essentially what I'm playing here is Slash's first solo from Knocking on Heaven's Door! Only I changed the key and played each phrase twice, with some variation. See? Now I told you it's obvious! Yes? TAKING IT FORWARD - Like I said, I'm not suggesting you steal the work of others, but why not learn a bunch of solos that you can take licks from? Over time they'll morph to become you. I reckoned I couldn't be the only person using this Idea, but I couldn't find anyone talking about it.....and finally I got around to sharing it with you. I hope you'll have fun with it. SB

Very convincing stuff there, SB. Subtle, simple... but oh so sweet!
Easy to replicate what your doing, not so easy for me to create something this soulful on my own. When backed into a corner (trying to improvise), I end up falling back on the aimless widdle of scales (drives my instructor crazy). I need to find myself.... I get your message, I can see the promise land.... I just need to learn the way there. |
