As most of you already now I am going to build this guitar for my bud Clay. It's coming from Guitar Fetish sometime this coming week. I have plans to really dial this kit guitar in and make it look and play right.

I have some good quality parts I will upgrade it with. Even though most of the hardware it comes with will never be used I will still keep the parts. I just can't throw away a good guitar part :D.

I have a brand new set of Ibanez active pickups and all the wiring and pots I need to wire it up. I also have a brand new set of Sperzial locking tuners and some good quality hardware for it. I also have a new Gibson bridge and stop tail for it.

This is going to be alot of work and alot of time to build it and get it right. I had about 10-12 hours in the last PRS style kit I built for my friend Bruno and I learned alot about these kit guitars.

I know some of you considered building a kit guitar before. I will show you step by step on this one. A little more detailed then any of my other builds I posted here.

https://guitarfetish.3dcartstores.com/Double-Cutaway-Set-Neck-Carved-Top-Flamed-maple-Kit-COMPLETE_p_1195.html

I really like the all Mahogany body and neck in this kit. I am thinking of staining or painting it red with a matching head stock.

Hey Chris, you up for some painting, lmao.

No I think it is bolt on. I have hide glue here and have glued in necks before. It's no biggie Mike. I set the neck in the pocket and use a clamp to hold it in place and put on both E strings and make sure it is lined up and mark the neck with a pencil.

The few I have glued in had the neck pocket and neck a real tight fit anyway. They were dead on anyway as far as alignment. But I always check it before.

A friend got a similar kit form GFS and it was a set neck. I think there descriptions are generic because at the bottom it says , get the right glues.

That is a much better looking kit than they used to have.

Yea, I agree with you. Plus all Mahogany body. It has to be a pretty good one. I am not worried though because I have bought so much from them all I would have to do is e-mail them and tell them I am not happy with the kit amd they would send me another one.

I have had a few issues with some of their parts before and they took care of the problem with no questions and very quickly. They do stand behind their parts and give me great service so I am loyal to them when I need some parts.

I don't think I have ever got an order than didn't have something wrong. :D

Jay comes across as a grumpy guy via email but always fixes you up. Twice they sent me the wrong tuners and sent out a new set and said keep the wrong ones for my troubles!! Who does that anymore?

Same here, they sent me a Tele body and it had issues. I told him it was bad and they sent me another one that he said he hand picked. It was perfect. He never asked for the old one back.

The body had issues and I could not assemble it and give it to a customer but it was still a nice Tele body so I put it together and gave it away at Cedar Lane school in a free raffle. There is a pic on my site of the girl that won it.

What was wrong with the body?. The hole for the bridge pup was not cut out in the right place and when you installed the bridge you could see the hole on one side of the bridge.

Just bad enough to where I could not sell it as new but good enough to free raffle it away.

2 Xaviere Tele's, 1 I owned and one I restrung had the same thing. You could see about a 32nd of an inch of the bridge pup hole with the bridge installed.
I have seen some MIM fenders with a similar thing too though.

Gary,

How much hand fitting of the neck/neck pocket and neck angle did you have to do?

Bolt neck is probably a bit easier for a first time-build, but what the heck.

I've got a couple amps to finish first, so I'll live vicariously through your projects.

The couple I have done I only had to sand the pocket and neck a little bit.

Well, I got the kit. I will post some pics later. The body looks really nice. The neck needs some TLC but very workable. It will still be a while before I start to put up vids because I am shipping the body off to Chris so he can paint it for me.

This kit looks to be very similar to the Saga kits but a tad better body and neck. Actually then body is really nice showing alot of grain on the top. The hardware is the same as the Saga kits but I won't be using most of it anyway.

I am leaving the color of the body up to Chris to decide. He is painting it so he picks the color.

See how easy I got out of that. If Clay does not like the color he can Bit... at Chris .

Good plan on the paint thing. Plausible denability:D

So was it a set or bolt on neck?

Astroboy058

Good plan on the paint thing. Plausible denability:D

So was it a set or bolt on neck?

Set neck Mike. The other PRS kit I built was fine. He played it at 4 shows. Then he knocked it off the stand and the neck came loose.

He brought it back to me. I looked at it and saw the glue held fine. The wood broke loose. Part of the body was still attached to the glue. Not a top quality body or wood.

So I drilled 4 holes and made it a bolt on....problem solved. I think Clay wants it to be a glued in neck. So I might do that and if it comes loose I can always make it a bolt on.

I am giving away all my secrets here. Actually everything I have told you all is....ah...ahh,.....false and not true.

Great video. Is it me or does it look like they left a bit of the headstock there for you to route it to whatever you like? I know some of the kits come with a paddle headstock so you can shape it to whatever you like. I think it helps them in licensing issues.

Damn that makes me want to build one:D

Flame Tops have a thin curly maple (also called Flame Maple or Tiger Maple) top over the base body wood. Quilted tops have a thin Quilted Maple top over the base body wood. See the attached images of each wood. They are not only decorative, but also add a touch of brightness to the tone, as the figured maple tops are very dense.

Ok players, I got the neck on it and I laid some hardware on it so you can get an idea of what it is going to look like.

After some research I decided to not use the Ibanez active pickups. No one seemed to like them and they all had the same complaints about them. I am using a new Seymour Duncan SH-1 in the bridge and a really nice bluesy sounding Epiphone in the neck. Clay has wanted this Epiphone pickup for about 5 years, lol. They made a mistake on this one. It sounds great!!!.

I will send it to Chris in a few weeks. I think it is going to be a pretty nice guitar coming from a kit. Well, Chris and I will make it a nice guitar, lmao.

A friend did and I think Gary mentioned it before too. They had two kits at one time. Paulawna (sp?) wood or Ash. The Paulawna is like balsa wood and hardly holds a screw. If they still have the Ash or Popular body one they would be good.

All of their Xaviere strats are Popular or Ash and they dont even use their light weight woods on their own guitars - tells you something

No Kim this is my first kit from them. I would not but a Strat kit from them myself because I can buy one of their Strat bodies for about $60 bucks, a mightymite neck for $90 and $15 bucks for their vintage single coil pup set. Add another hundred for hardware and you have a Strat like one of these in the pic.

I wanted the PRS style body from the kit mostly, lol. It takes all my skills to put one of these kits together and make it like I want it to be. It is not hard to do, it just takes alot of time. Don't get me wrong, you can buy one of the kits and put it together and play it but it will not be half the quality of the ones in the pic for about $100 more investment. It is satisfying and fun though.

Chris had a fair amount of prep work on the body and neck. I threw him a tangled up ball of rope on this one. I am very very excited about having him paint it. Clay is excited about it too!.

When I told him that Chris was going to paint it he got this big old smile on his face. I have known Clay for about 15 years. I never knew he even had a smile. Wow, you think you know someone and boom they throw a smile at you..go figure.

I recently took KP's advise that he gave in a prior post here in the tech section. He said orange drop caps were junk. Ahh hmm I use orange drop caps Keith .

But I will be honest most customers ask for the orange drops. So after reading his post about caps and such I went to Mojotone and ordered some .22 and .47 oil filled caps and the cap/resister for the volume bleed add-on. I am going to put both of them in Clays Agile PRS copy this morning and see what I can hear.

I have already installed a .47 oil filled cap in another guitar just as an exsperiment. What I noticed was a completely different travel as far as the drop off. It was late so I really could not check it out properly I will check it out this morning.

See I am not that stubborn. I am trying something new here.

Ok good, cause these 2 Gibson pickups keep staring at me wondering why I dont solder them in NOW!!!

I haven't decide which wiring to do but probably the modern. I have the correct caps and resistors here if I decide to do the treble bleed mod while I am in there.
Have you done any of this mod? Any difference?

I need to crank up the HRD tube and and see. Playing through my Korgs I don't hear much of any difference. I did replace the cap and added the treble mod to his Agile this morning but I have not played it yet.

Well boys and girls, Clay just left taking his Agile PRS copy with him.

As I said before I tried MojoTone's oil filled caps in my Tele and his Agile. I also did the treble bleed mod to both of them.

To sum it up the orange drops are out. There is a big difference when you roll the tone back with these new caps in both guitar's. It's not as dark sounding as the orange drops and the drop off is not as extreme.

Clay and I both give these caps thumbs up.

Thanks KP, I learned something today. I was wro..rog...wr..wron...I was not correct with my assumption that the orange drops were better caps. There is nothing wrong with them. They are just different.

Now I will order some other types they have there and experiment some with the different type tones I might get.

Very cool!!!

You two obviously don't understand the artist-masterpiece relationship. I need to spend some time alone with this fine lady. Get to know her a little. Develope a deep bond. Yes I anticipate many hours of my hand gently caressing her ample curves. Rubbing with just the right combination of pressure and friction, to coax the natural beauty from her naked body, before I finally dress her in the finest colors and most lustrous top coat.
So? Have I got your blood up yet?:D

Okay so here's the first status report.
Well it looks pretty good right out of the shoot, but as is true most of the time, this lovely ladie's body is not perfect. Hell Cindy Crawford's bobby isn't perfect, and I don't see anyone complaining.:D This body has a thin quilted maple veneer over a mahogany base. It has a few dimples, and spots where it was sanded too far exposing the mohagony below. Also there are some small gaps between the binding strip and the veneer.
Is all this a big deal? Hell no. It's kinda like finding a pimple on Cindy's butt. Perfectly natural, but has to be air brushed out before it goes to print.
So I've just applied some color matched wood filler to the body and neck, where needed. When it dries, I'll sand it away, and hopefully no one will ever notice.
I will say that I will not be rushing this job. Veneers are extremely thin. There is no room for error. When I've made my flame top bodies it is at least an eight inch ( usually a quarter inch) thick maple cap. If I make mistakes on these there is still plenty of wood to sand out the mistake and start again. With a veneer I don't have that luxury.
Does this mean Gary sent me an inferior body? Hell no. It's always a balance between cost and quality. If I made a body from mahogany and capped it with a similar looking solid piece of quilted maple I'd be almost $200.00 into it just to order the wood.
So what I'm trying to say here is please be patient with me. This is a very special lady we want to get to Clay. She might be as finicky as a trophy wife, but with patients we can make her as beautiful as one also.

First step complete. Gary drew a cut out design on the head stock. This morning I cut it out on the band saw at work and sanded it down, Also sanded away the excess wood filler where i filled a few dimples and the screw holes for the tuners. The holes didn't match the tuners Gary is going to use. I expect to be applying color this weekend, and lacquer next week.

Clay, Chris and I did make a mistake though. We got our colors and guitars mixed up. Sarah's acoustic is going to be blue and your PRS will be pink.

And that ladies and gentlemen is why I sent it to Chris. I haven't been this excited about a guitar build since the first one I did.

Now if I can get it to sound and play like it looks then we will have something.

The G&C SYA Special!!!!!!!!

The electronics that will be on the guitar will have no push pull pots because the pups are only 2 wire pups. But you know me I always have to put some kind of option on a build of mine. Whether it be push pulls or series/parallel on the Strats.

I have something a little different in mind on this one. I will keep that a secret until I demo it,lol.

Chris, can you explain your buffing technique/process?

I've polished lots of aluminum, brass, and copper, on a wheel, but only have done laquer by hand (long, long, process;)).

I tried to buff a gas tank about 30 years ago. Buffer was way too fast, needless to say I burned it in about 3 seconds:eek: At least it was my bike, so I got to paint the tank again...

Well everyone I'm still at it. I got this sucker almost beautiful, but there's this one stubborn little blemish right on the front that is driving me bonkers. So sorry for the delay Gary. I get it right though.
Ross sorry I missed your question.
I start by wet sanding the lacquer with 500 grit sandpaper. This is followed by wet sanding with 600, 800, 1000, and finally 1500 grit papers. You can use a power sander if you are very, very careful. If you build up any heat due to friction it will melt the lacquer. After that I use an automotive polishing compound to get a glass like finish. It is not uncommon at this point to see imperfections that we're missed. The only thing to do then is start over with the sanding.

Ahh yea..ahh yea..I am making "my" guitar but I am going to give it to Clay as a B-Day present. I am doing this after much consideration and thought. I think it would be in my best health/interest to not keep this awesome guitar but to give it to someone who has 14 more guns then I do.

This decision is made not by fear but by a preserve thy self nature...nothing more nothing less. So with me making this decision I am taking away any hard decisions Clay would have to make were he not receive the guitar like which gun or guns to use. How many rounds he would likely need.

Plus I also take away the happy factor he would get firing off 40-60- rounds even though I handed it to him after the first round was fired .
